Great Basin National Park contains over 40 known caves that fall into four distinct groups: Lehman Hill, Baker Creek, Snake Creek and Alpine. Many of these caves are believed to have formed together through hydrological and / or structural processes and showcase unique formations such as shields.

The Lehman Caves began forming approximately 600M years ago as a limy layer of sediments lithified under the pressure and weight of overlying depositions

This limestone rock cracked and fractured from the stress of mountain building activity, exposing surface area to acidic water

Water from rain and melting snow absorbed carbon dioxide from air and decaying vegetation and generated carbonic acid, which dissolved cavities in the rock

The Lehman Caves are a solution cave, which form in rock dissolved by acidic water

Cave passages will develop at about the level of the water table or just below it, provided the water level remains constant for a long time

Lehman Caves is distinguished by diverse and numerous formations (speleothems), most notably shields, draperies, popcorn and helictites

The Lehman Caves entrance is located in a fairly anonymous pinyon-juniper forest next to the visitor center
