Oneonta Falls
Portland - Columbia River Gorge
Oneonta Falls is located .3 miles from the Historic Columbia River Highway in Oneonta Gorge. This iconic waterfall drops over 100' through a narrow, high-walled slot near the mouth of Oneonta Creek. A short walk leads over a logjam and wades through knee to chest high water to the base of the falls.
A short, dry path quickly fades and funnels hikers into the creek to the base of the logjam
Bryophytes provide food and habitat for wildlife, a source of readily decomposable organic material, and contribute to a healthy nutrient cycle
The creek runs over, through and over portions of the logjam, making this short cross a slippery and sometimes dangerous task
From the edge of the logjam, travel continues in ankle to chest high+ water through slots to the base of the falls
Some logs in the jam float and are not stable, requiring that you test each step before committing full weight
Stairs lead from Oneonta Bridge into the gorge, where you'll continue a short distance on dry boot tracks up the west (right) side of the creek
Sheltered, north-facing drainages on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge provide cool, perennially moist habitats for cliff-clinging mosses, lichens, ferns and flowers
Concrete was injected into cracks and crevasses to stabilize rock in the Oneonta Bluff while a large bore hole was dug to create the Oneonta Tunnel
Oneonta Tunnel was re-opened in 2009, and visitors can now walk over the Oneonta Bridge through the tunnel
